FB Faux Pas

Have you seen this post floating around the interwebs? It offers up some Facebook status “don’ts” and how to rectify them. (As in, it’s obnoxious to write status updates about your workout because no one cares. Whoops! Guilty!) I read it and moved on. I’m not a big believer in online etiquette or rules – The wild, wild web is a free for all! It comes with the territory. I have more of a “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” philosophy.

Recently, I did, however, make a terrible Facebook mistake. An old college friend, someone I was close with for a semester or two but that’s it, posted on Facebook that her mother recently passed away. Even though this friend and I haven’t spoken in a long time, it was hard for me to see that and say nothing. I sat staring into my computer monitory trying to drum up the right words to say. Nothing to touchy since aren’t close. Nothing too cold since it’s a really heavy situation. Something just right.

Once I found the perfect phrase, I moved the mouse over to click on ‘comment.’

What? What’d I click? Wait a seco- No!!!!!!! I clicked ‘like‘ instead! ACK!

Thank goodness I could immediately hit ‘unlike‘ and pretend that it never happened. My heart was racing. I felt sweaty. In a matter of two  nano-seconds, I was having a physical reaction. I would feel like the biggest bung-hole in all the universe if I actually clicked that and was stuck with it. Close call!

Even though I’m not a big believer in rules when it comes to Facebook, it’s definitely a rule that you should never click ‘like‘ when someone else posts horrible news. Ever!

Have you ever committed a Facebook faux pas? Do you have rules or do’s and don’t's when it comes to FB and the internet?*
