When we were living stateside, Sonic is one of the fast food places that Stephen and I would hit up regularly.
(With foods like tater tots, cream slushes, and banana cream pie milk shakes, it’s hard to avoid!) Stephen’s favorite item from Sonic: extra long chili cheese coney with mustard and onions.
Since eating at Sonic isn’t really an option in Germany, I thought it might be fun to have chili dog night at our house. And since I don’t imbibe in the meats, I needed to come up with an alternate idea for moi. Enter: the pickle dog.
This is my go-to choice when it comes to hot dogs. Sure, you can find meatless options, but they just don’t cut it for me. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-faux meat. In fact, I love faux breakfast sausages. But don’t faux hot dogs taste rubbery?)
While Stephen went to town on his Hebrew National franks topped with chili, I was in pickle dog heave. I loaded this bad boy up with mustard, ketchup, onion, and shredded cheese. Of course, the pickle spear in the middle is the star of the show. Tart and juicy. Just what my tum-tum wanted!
For a more protein-y approach, you could put veggie chili on top or enjoy some baked beans on the side. (I had been snacking all day, so the three of these that I ate were plenty.) Deelish!
Stephen told me that he thought this was a weird thing to eat, but y’all, it’s so good! Am I crazy? Would you eat this? What’s your favorite hot dog topping? I gotta go with onions!*
umm yyyyeah I’m gonna have to go ahead and say no thanks. Pass on the onions too. The best topping for any kind of hot dog is SAUERKRAUT!!! All the way!! Kraut my dog, pleaseandthankyou. Hey, you wanted tart and juicy…
I’m going to have to agree with Janelle. While I do love a good pickle, I can’t imagine enjoying a pickle dog.

Never tried or even thought of a pickle dog, but not much different than a cheese sandwich with pickles on it, might not be too bad. I like both chili/cheese or sauerkraut on mine.
I have to agree…pickle dogs do not sound like my thang haha. I feel like the pickle juice would make the bun all soggy! My favorite hot dog topping is definitely chili and cheese. You’re making me hungry!
That’s a little weird… I love pickles and I love hot dog buns but a pickle dog? It kinda gives me heartburn just thinking about it!

Wow. I don’t really like pickles so I wouldn’t seek something like this out, but I do like to be experimental with food so I’d definitely try it at least once. Hey, a pickle dog would be a ton healthier than a real hotdog, that’s for sure1
