A List of Names

September 11th seemed to come out of nowhere this year. And it’s on a Tuesday, like it was in 2001. I wish that in the 11 years since the attacks that I had gained some insight or wisdom about it all, but I haven’t. Instead, I find that I feel a lot like I did last year on this day: quiet, and thankful, and worrisome.

To mark this day, I am going to read the names of those killed in the attacks on September 11th, 2001, and pray for their families. Hopefully they have found some wisdom or peace in all of this. (You can read the list here.)

And of course, I have to give my heartfelt thanks to those who fight for our freedom and their families. My thoughts are with you.

Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children”  - President George W. Bush, November 2001.*

  1. Sept. 11 really did creep up on us this year, didn’t it? I was almost shocked when I saw the date today. I can’t believe that it’s been 10 years already since it happened. I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the plane crash (I was on a bus enroute to work, and one of my friends called me to tell me about it – then when I got to the office, all of my coworkers were huddled around a radio listening to the story breaking live.) My prayers go out to the families that lost someone that day, as well.

  2. Amy, thanks for posting this – I remember exactly where I was when the first plane hit – sitting on the sofa on Hillview and watching with you. So much has changed in the world since then – but as I watched many of the tributes yesterday it reminded me that the sacrifices made that day & beyond were not in vain. I am working my way thirough the list of names but it’s slow going, I can only do a letter or two at a time.
