Top 5 European Eats (So Far!)

Do you ever watch that show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” on the Food Network? I love it, but it always makes me hungry. Haha! I thought I’d share a few of the best things I’ve eaten since moving to across the pond.

#5: Apple Strudel in Salzburg.

I lived in Michigan for a few years as a kid, and apples are in abundance there. Not a year went by without drinking apple cider, watching videos about Johnny Appleseed, or taking a field trip to the apple orchard. As a result, I love me some apples, but I’m not much of an apple dessert person. (Apple pie? No thanks.) This apple strudel changed my mind! Warm, flakey, with cream on the side. Oh, baby! that cream! It was so good that we ended up eating one for an afternoon snack and ordering another for dessert after dinner.

#4: Veggie spaetzel in Bamberg.

I was really excited (and really scared) to eat something really German. This spaetzel was a great surprise. I can only describe the taste as a mix between gnocchi, mac and cheese, and veggies. A little chewy, a lot cheesy, and all my favorite vegetables. (Except for the mushrooms; those were weird.)

#3: Chocolate banana split in Weiden.

Ice cream is huge here! You can’t walk down the street without seeing signs for the shops. And all day long you’ll see people walking around with their cones or sitting outside going to town on a big ol’ bowl. (Although, I heard the shops close in the winter! No! Ice cream is good all year long!) This was our first post-move ice cream treat. Stephen and I shared it, but I swear, I could have eaten it all by myself.

#2: Bruschetta in Weiden.

There are tons of delicious Italian restaurants all over Germany. (Great for me since I love Italian!) On this particular day, I had linguine for lunch, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but it was the appetizers that I was really drooling over. (I could have eaten three times this much!)

#1: Pumpkin soup in Salzburg.

Our first night in Salzburg, we were starving for dinner. (Probably has something to do with not getting lunch. Oy!) We ended up eating at our hotel (Haus Wartenburg). The service was lacking (they had 3 events going on, so the two of us got lost in the shuffle!), but the food more than made up for it. This big old bowl of orange was the perfect amount, perfect temperature (especially since it was cool out), and the just-right texture. (Pureed soups can go way not good, but this one was a little chunky, a little smooth.) I would have licked the bowl if I thought people wouldn’t have looked at me like I was crazy.

There you have it! Five foods that I’d eat again in a heart beat! Hopefully after I get some more time here under my belt, I’ll be able to share some more delicious eats!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently? Or best food you’ve eaten on vacation?*

  2. Julie says:

Yum!! I want to try every one of those things… Now I’ve got to plan a European vacation! Haha.

  3. I loooove spaetzel. We have some pretty authentic German restaurants around Orlando that are amazing. Also, totally agree on the apple thing. I am not a fan of apple pie (but I do like apple crisp…mostly for the crisp).
Hmm…best thing I ate was a butterfish in Maui, also everything I put into my mouth in Austin was the best. :-)

  4. Looks fantastic! It’s 9AM EST here in the US, and I’m starving!

  5. This post is mean. I want to eat all the things! I guess the best treat I’ve had recently was pumpkin snickerdoodles from my sister.

  6. Janelle says:

Your spaetzel looks awesome and I’ll take every single one of your mushrooms. Have you tried them lately? I used to haaate them and now I likeitloveitwantsomemoreofit. Can’t get enough mushrooms!

Three best vacation meals: lobster wontons in New Orleans, raclette in Switzerland, and all European breakfasts. THE FRESH BREAD omgeeee I died and went to bread heaven.

I love how 2 of your top 5 are desserts. High five for that!

    • Army Amy says:

It was not lost on me that 2 of the foods mentioned were desserts! Originally it was 3, but I thought that might be overkill. Sadly, ice cream places stay closed here during the winter! How will I ever survive?!*

  7. Bianca says:

Gotta love posts about food! ;)

  8. lifeisarun says:

OMG that all looks and sounds amazing!! Want that apple strudel now!

  9. Amanda says:

WOAH. That apple strudel looks divine.

  10. Emily says:

YUMMY YUMMY. Especially the ice cream and the pumpkin soup. HUNGRY!!!!!

Can’t wait to see what other food items get added to the top of the list!!!

  11. I love these pictures! People always say that the number one way to save on travel expenses is to eat less, or pack lunches, or shop at the grocery store. But I feel like eating the food is the number one reason I travel! (well maybe not number one…) but I LOVE to eat, and eating while traveling is a food lover’s dream! I’m glad you partook.

    • Army Amy says:

I agree – food is half the appeal of the trip! I never get anything too extravagant, and I don’t mind packing my own breakfast (maybe that’s the compromise), but I’m not skimping on dinner!*

  12. I just made my first apple pie of the season. I loove apple stuff. Totally jealous of that Apple Strudel thing.

  13. I’ve got to find a good recipe for pumpkin soup this fall!

  14. The Linz says:

YUM!!! All that food sounds delish! My favorite dish ever was some pasta dish in Italy that was full of shrimp and mussels. It is so weird to me that it’s my favorite thing ever as I never ate seafood before living in Italy.
