KF Marathon Training: T-Minus 7 Weeks

As of today, we are under the 50 day mark! Eek! I’m feeling excited, not scared, that it’s getting closer and closer. While my legs probably aren’t ready for the full 26.2 yet, I’m feeling mostly mentally ready. (That’s half the battle!)

Weekly Stats:

  • Number of workouts this week: 5! -  an interval run, a tempo run, a long run, two sessions on the stationary bike.
  • Total number of miles run so far during training: 185.15  (27.25 this week!)
  • Geronimo’s total number of miles this week: 2.5
  • Temperature on the coldest run: 24 with flurries
  • Days until the marathon: 49
Taken before the run started as I look not nearly cold enough. Oh, little girl, you don't know what you are in for. Better zip up that jacket and cover yo' ears!

I squeezed in my long run on Friday. (The best part of only running 3 days a week is the flexibility of scheduling.) It started off kind of rocky. I had intended to run 4 miles with Geronimo, but he was being obnoxiously skittish. I ended up dropping him off back at home after only 1 mile of running. (Thus, the reason his mileage is so low this week.) That threw a wrench in my plans. I called him a turkey (my go-to insult) grabbed my gu, and tried to take it in stride.

It ended up being no big deal. (Duh. Why do I let little things get me worked up?) And I had a great run! I spent the miles thinking about things great and small, trying to have good form, and wondering how nice it would feel to be inside where it’s warm. (Seriously seriously cold run. Yeah, so cold that it warrants using two seriouslys.)

Halfway into the run. I was an Amy popsicle.

Halfway into the run. I was an Amy Popsicle. This lasted for many miles.

Long Run Stats:

  • 16 mile finish time: 2:48:16
  • Average pace: 10:30 per mile

My splits weren’t as consistent as I like, but they ended up hitting my goal pace on the nosey. I’ll take it!

My running path. Did I end up in Antarctica somehow?

The rest of the afternoon was spent wondering where my day went. It was suddenly very late, and I had to feed myself. (Hate when the evening sneaks up on me like that!) It ended up being a day of running and a day of lazing. Can’t complain about that!

Next week’s long run is 12 miles. It doesn’t seem quite as long now that I’ve worked my way up to 16. If only the weather would be more cooperative!*

Yay!!! Less than 50 days to go before the big day and you are CRUISING along with your training! I only ran 3 days a week when I was training for Chicago, and I agree with you that the flexibility is awesome. It helps a lot from a mental perspective, too. Congratulations on getting your 16-miler crossed off the list! Isn’t it amazing how 12-milers are such a refresher once you’ve built yourself up to that point!?!?!? And I absolutely love those days of running and then lazing. =D

  2. Mental readiness is the bigger half of the battle, at least for me! Congrats on hitting your goal pace :)

  3. Holy hell, your picture are making me cold.

  4. I have so much to say, I don’t know where to start! I love that jacket, it looks very comfortable, maybe not very warm though.

The cold weather is not going to help you acclimate to Texas weather when you get back. You’re going to go from nice spring times to crazy hot. That’s not fun at all.

Your success with the three day training program has me very encouraged. My biggest argument against being able to train for a marathon is the time commitment, I just can’t see myself running five days a week. But I’m already running three days a week most weeks, I know I can do that.

Saying 50 days makes it seem so much sooner than saying 7 weeks.

This is my favorite running top! It is waffle-y on the inside, so it is both lightweight and warm. The trick is to wear the right under layers. And I’m kind of dreading the Texas heat. I’m guessing that when we leave here it’ll still be cold and when we get there it’ll already be hot.

Running 3 times a week is working out pretty well so far. The plan says you are also supposed to do 2 days a week of cross training. I’ve been doing it but I don’t do anything too hardcore or time consuming. (I just wouldn’t do it at all if that was the case.) The only tricky part scheduling-wise would be having enough time to do those long runs.*

No gloves? Or just no gloves for the photo? I guess your top might be long enough to serve as precious finger-protectors.

    • Army Amy says:

The sleeves on my jacket have little pockets that turn them into instant mittens! Usually my hands get hot a few miles into a run, which is why my fingers are out in the picture.*

Haha, Germany places competition on Canada for the coldest country some days – that I now know for sure!!
